Tensile Properties and Hardness

Upon exposure to intermediate temperatures, some hardening occurs in Alloy 625. To demonstrate this reaction, samples of annealed rod were exposed to 1200°F, 1400°F, and 1600°F for 2000 hours. Dimensional stability measurements showed samples exposed at 1200°F to 1400°F for 2000 hours contracted by approximately 0.048%.

Inconel 625 Machining

  • Capacity — Use rigid, overpowered machines wherever possible.
  • Rigidity — Hold workpiece and tool firmly; minimize tool overhang.
  • Tool Sharpness — Keep tools sharp at all times; change on a schedule rather than waiting for failure. A 0.015" wear land indicates a dull tool.
  • Tools — Positive rake angle tools for most operations; negative rake for intermittent cuts and heavy stock removal. Carbide-tipped tools recommended for most applications.
  • Positive Cuts — Maintain heavy, constant feeds to avoid work hardening from tool dwell.
  • Lubrication — Soluble oils recommended, especially with carbide tooling.

Inconel 625 Ductility and Toughness

Inconel Alloy 625 retains excellent ductility and toughness even at low temperatures, making it suitable for cryogenic and sub-zero applications.

Alloy 625 Features & Benefits

  • Heat and cold resistance
  • Chloride stress resistance
  • Corrosion cracking resistance
  • Salt, fresh water, and alkaline chemical resistance
  • Stability during welding
  • Scaling and oxidation resistance

Common Applications of Nickel Alloy 625

  • Jet engine components
  • Heat exchangers
  • Chemical processing equipment

Inconel 625 ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code

Inconel Alloy 625 is an approved construction material under the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. Allowable design stresses apply for Grade 1 material under Section VIII, Division 1 construction up to 1200°F, Section III Class 2 and 3 construction up to 800°F, and Grade 2 material under Section VIII, Division 1 up to 1600°F per ASME Section II, Part D. Rules for Section I construction with Grade 1 material up to 1100°F are covered under ASME Code Case 1935.

Inconel 625 Microstructure

Inconel Alloy 625 is a solid-solution matrix-stiffened face-centered-cubic alloy that may contain carbides inherent to this alloy type.

Inconel 625 Corrosion Resistance

The high alloy content of Inconel 625 allows it to withstand a wide range of severe corrosive environments. In mild environments — atmosphere, fresh and sea water, neutral salts, and alkaline media — there is almost no attack. In more severe environments, the combination of nickel and chromium resists oxidizing chemicals, while high nickel and molybdenum content resists non-oxidizing environments. High molybdenum content also delivers strong resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, while niobium stabilizes the alloy against sensitization during welding, preventing subsequent intergranular cracking. The high nickel content also provides freedom from chloride ion stress-corrosion cracking.
