The advantage of utilizing an RTJ flange and ring is that the gasket is constrained to a groove with two sealing surfaces. The groove ensures that the ring aligns itself as the bolts are tightened. On these flanges, the sealing pressure increases as the process pressure increases.

One disadvantage of employing RTJ flanges is that the grooves might accumulate dirt or moisture while the flange is open. It is critical that the grooves and ring gaskets are properly aligned in order to achieve the proper seal. The seal must be kept throughout the operation cycle.
There are three types of Ring Type Joint Gasket designs: R Type, RX Type, and BX Type. The R Type is the most often used, and it comes with two different profiles: oval or octagonal. The oval type was the original design, including an oval-shaped groove machined into the Flange Face. The octagonal RTJ is a variation on the oval form and the most popular due to its sealing efficiency. The R and RX octagonal gaskets have the same groove design. The RX is designed for greater pressures of up to 5000 psi and performs better in environments with vibration and shock loading. The BX Type gasket is only for API 6BX Type Flanges and can withstand pressures of up to 20,000 psi. The Ring Number will be stamped on the RTJ Flange's outer diameter to identify the type of ring to be used.

The Ring Type Joint, or RTJ, is the type of gasket required for the flange. The Ring Type Joint was created for the petroleum and petrochemical sectors, where higher pressures and temperatures exist. The sealing surface is a high tolerance groove carved into the face of the Flange, having a maximum finish of 63 RMS. Every Standards have clearly requirements for steel flanges’ marking style, usually the marking words include seller’s Logo, buyer’s Logo (OEM), standard number, flange’s type, flange’s pressure, flange’s size, flange’s material, place of origin, heat number and other words for convenient to trace. If the flanges repaired by welding, it must mark on flanges showing this flange repared by welding. If the flange’s dimensions (OD, ID, PCD, Thickness, Holes number, Holes diameter, Tolerance etc) are different with the normal standard, it also must mark on flanges where it is different with normal ones. Another important place is heat number marking, it is the tracing base for every piece flange, and from the heat number we can trace to the beginning of raw material import.
