Ring Type Joint Flanges (RTJ) are commonly used in high-temperature applications above 427°C or under extreme pressure. Steel ring gaskets fit into the grooves that are separated into the faces of the flanges. When the bolts are tightened, the gasket in these flanges compresses and seals into the slots. The gasket is coined to make intimate contact with the grooves and form a metal-to-metal seal. The elevated face of the RTJ flange has a ring groove punched into it. There is no function for this elevated face in the sealing process. Ring gaskets are used to seal these RTJ flanges; the raised faces of the tightened and linked flanges may come into touch with one another. The compressed gasket cannot carry additional force beyond bolt tension and vibration, therefore movement cannot further crush the gasket and reduce connection stress.

The Ring Type Joint, or RTJ, is the type of gasket required for the flange. The Ring Type Joint was created for the petroleum and petrochemical sectors, where higher pressures and temperatures exist. The sealing surface is a high tolerance groove carved into the face of the Flange, having a maximum finish of 63 RMS. When the bolts are torqued down, the RTJ ring compresses into the groove of the flanges, forming a seal.
Ring Type Joint gaskets are manufactured to ASME B16.20 standards and are suitable for use with ANSI B16.5, ASME B16.47 Series A, and API 6A flanges.
The advantage of utilizing an RTJ flange and ring is that the gasket is constrained to a groove with two sealing surfaces. The groove ensures that the ring aligns itself as the bolts are tightened. On these flanges, the sealing pressure increases as the process pressure increases.
One disadvantage of employing RTJ flanges is that the grooves might accumulate dirt or moisture while the flange is open. It is critical that the grooves and ring gaskets are properly aligned in order to achieve the proper seal. The seal must be kept throughout the operation cycle.

Every Standards have clearly requirements for steel flanges’ marking style, usually the marking words include seller’s Logo, buyer’s Logo (OEM), standard number, flange’s type, flange’s pressure, flange’s size, flange’s material, place of origin, heat number and other words for convenient to trace. If the flanges repaired by welding, it must mark on flanges showing this flange repared by welding. If the flange’s dimensions (OD, ID, PCD, Thickness, Holes number, Holes diameter, Tolerance etc) are different with the normal standard, it also must mark on flanges where it is different with normal ones. Another important place is heat number marking, it is the tracing base for every piece flange, and from the heat number we can trace to the beginning of raw material import.
